A Changing Basin — read our new series

From the headwaters to the Delta, the Mississippi River basin is undergoing huge change — from new levels of dangerous heat and humidity, to waves of wildfire smoke and unpredictable swings between intensifying rainfall, flooding, and drought.

These extremes, driven by climate change, are affecting pollution and runoff, straining local budgets and putting new pressures on aging infrastructure, which humans have used for a century or more to try and control the river and its tributaries.

How will people in this vast watershed respond? In our new series A Changing Basin, the Ag & Water Desk digs into that question. The answers will shape the future of water supplies, farms and habitats that sustain millions of lives and support countless species.

We need your help to tell these stories! How is extreme weather affecting you, and how is your community trying to adapt? Please take our quick survey, and share it with your friends and family too. Thanks in advance and stay tuned for more of A Changing Basin.

Stay cool out there,

Annie Ropeik

Ag & Water Desk Assistant Director
